Thunderstorms forecast over the Karoo today

Heavy rain is expected along the Garden Route early on Thursday morning.

GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - The South African Weather Service has issued weather warnings affecting the Karoo today and the Garden Route tomorrow.

A cut-off low pressure system dominating the south-west of the country, associated with a surface trough over the western interior, is expected to produce severe thunderstorms over the Beaufort West municipality today.

These thunderstorms are expected to produce strong and gusty winds (50-60km/h), excessive lightning, large amount of small hail as well as heavy downpours (20-45mm).

Impact-based warning

Yellow level 2 Warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges as well as damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail resulting in damage to infrastructure and settlements are expected in places over the Beaufort West municipality today, Wednesday 4 February; but over the Garden Route district tomorrow, Thursday 5 February.
