MOSSEL BAY NEWS -  The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape have issued a notice today, 8 February warning Mossel Bay business owners of a scam circulating in the area.

According to Warrant Officer Chris Spies, spokesperson for the Southern Cape Police, Mossel Bay businesses are being contacted via fake letters, asking for donations to be made to the police.

"These fake letters are distributed via WhatsApp and bear the official SAPS logo with the name of an officer to make the document credible. The individual mentioned, cell number used and account have no association with the South African Police Service," said Spies.

An investigation is underway to establish the origin of the fake messages as well as the associated accounts.

Spies has emphasised the importance of verifying correspondence from or on behalf of the police through legitimate channels of the SAPS.

"Members of the public are urged not to engage with these individuals and report such activities to the nearest police station or at Crime Stop on 086 001 0111."
