GEORGE NEWS - The Nelson Mandela University's George Campus welcomed its first-year students with a special function at the Furntech Building on Saturday 31 January.

In her live stream welcome address from Gqeberha, the vice chancellor, Prof Sibongile Mutha, highlighted the infrastructure and support provided to first-year students to help them succeed and encouraged them to grab this opportunity, to persevere and to work hard. "There is no other way towards success than hard work," she said.

She said they should also take part in activities beyond the classroom, such as arts and culture, sport and community engagement opportunities. "Be positive citizens as you study."

The campus principal, Dr Kaluke Mawila, emphasised in her address that George is a campus of sustainability and that the students are joining a community deeply committed to being solutions-driven and future-focused. She stressed the ongoing water challenges of the Garden Route to inform the students that the sparing use of water is required.

"Being a student here also means being a responsible citizen of the Garden Route," she said.

The students were also introduced to the friendly team of campus buddies - older students who will be guiding the first-years during their time of adjustment to campus life.

About 1 700 first-year students have registered to date.

The campus' communications manager, Milisa Piko, said the university is still open to potential landlord partners to provide accommodation for all the students.

George Campus principal, Dr Kaluke Mawila, gave the first-years a hearty welcome. Here she is with three students: Mabona Yola (from Flagstaff, registered for the management diploma), Olwethu Mazibuko (Bergville, KZN, enrolled for BCom), and Yarka Carolus (from Robertson, enrolled for the management diploma) with her father, Heinrich, and brother, Savea.
