GEORGE NEWS - Island Lake was abuzz with colour and activity on Sunday 25 January when the George Lakes Yacht Club hosted an open day aimed at introducing the public to the sport of sailing.

More than 76 residents from Sedgefield, Wilderness and George attended the event, taking advantage of favourable weather conditions and the light breeze.

Visitors of all ages were given the opportunity to experience sailing on Island Lake, and 21 boats were made available, including Gypsies, general-purpose 14-foot sailing dinghies (GP14s), Mirror dinghies and Hobie Cat 16-foot catamarans.

Many children took to the water alongside their parents, some for the first time.

The organisers said the event was designed to provide a safe and welcoming introduction to sailing, allowing the participants to gain confidence while enjoying the outdoor environment. Throughout the day, experienced sailors assisted newcomers, ensuring that each outing on the water was both enjoyable and well supervised.

Sailing is regarded as a family-oriented activity that encourages co-operation and shared experiences across generations. In addition to time spent on the water, the sport helps develop skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and responsibility, particularly among younger participants.

The open day highlighted the accessibility of sailing, with attendees able to participate without prior experience or equipment.

It also demonstrated the range of opportunities available in the sport, from recreational sailing to more struc-tured and competitive participation.

Sailing coach Evelyn Osborne said the strong turnout reflected growing interest in outdoor and water-based activities in the region. The event concluded with positive feedback from the participants, many of whom indicated an interest in exploring sailing further in the future.
