SPORT NEWS - Perfect weather, fast racing and a glimpse of South Africa's future triathlon stars combined to make Sunday's third event of the Eden Triathlon Championships 2025/26 season a memorable one at Great Brak River.

With calm conditions greeting the competitors across all the distances, the spotlight firmly fell on the super sprint and sprint categories, in which several junior athletes delivered performances that underlined their growing national credentials.

Among them were Johannes Brink and Karli Lötter, whose commanding wins further strengthened their bids for selection to the South African junior team set to tour Europe later in June.

The super sprint races once again proved to be a hotbed of emerging talent. Wanru Haasbroek produced a composed and well-balanced race to claim victory in the men's event, holding off Cameron McEwan and Bastian Vorster in a tightly contested finish. In the women's race, Kayla Douglas stood out with a confident performance across all three disciplines, confirming her consistency in the series.

In the sprint distance, Brink delivered a polished display to take top honours in the men's race, while Lötter impressed with a decisive win in the women's category.

Both athletes have been among the most consistent performers this season and continue to set the benchmark in their divisions.

Determined and focused, Akhona Livingston pushes through the cycling leg.

The standard distance events provided a stern test of endurance. Bonga Nkqintiza and Chanté Hopkins emerged as the standout performers. Nkqintiza claimed victory in the men's race after a strong bike and controlled run, while Hopkins dominated the women's field to secure a convincing win.

Team racing also added to the excitement, with the Dominators and the Hot Laps and Power Gaps claiming honours in their respective categories, while the AquaBike races highlighted impressive swim-and-bike combinations across both men's and women's fields.

The Eden team that will represent the region at the South African Championships in Benoni, Gauteng, on 8 March is expected to be announced shortly.

The next event on the Eden Triathlon calendar takes place on 22 February, with the momentum clearly building as the season progresses.

Finishing strong, Marcel Roos came second in the men's challenging standard-distance event.
