GEORGE NEWS - What do Watsonsdorp, Caledon Square, Blanco, Hoogekraal, Montagu Pass, Cradock’s Pass and the Van Kervel Dam have in common?

These names all represent significant communities and landmarks - tangible heritage sites that form the backbone of George’s central history. But why are they so important?

Join the guided George CBD Heritage Walk and discover the stories behind these places, along with many other fascinating facts about the people and histories that shaped George.

From forestry and woodcutting to agriculture and the establishment of the first VOC outpost in 1777, the tour reveals how the town grew into what we know today.

Grassroots Heritage Communities of George, together with local cultural workers, have been actively recording, researching and preserving George’s slave and community heritage.

This walk provides a rare opportunity to engage with that history directly.
