GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Families and trail runners are invited to lace up their shoes for the second TROYSTA RUN, taking place on Sunday, 22 February. A special event that celebrates the life of young trail runner, Troy Schofield, while giving back to the trails he loved.

Choose between a fun 5km trail walk/run, perfect for families and beginners, or a more challenging 10km which follows the same route Troy ran in 2021 when he won the Junior MUT Lite.

The TROYSTA RUN was established after Troy, a local 18-year-old rising trail star, passed away unexpectedly on 1 August 2024 following a sudden and devastating 48-hour battle with bacterial meningitis (meningococcal). He was in his matric year and excited about the future ahead of him.

Troy’s greatest love was the outdoors, especially the Outeniqua Mountains and the trail running community within them.

Known for his determination, humility and respect for nature, Troy achieved remarkable success at a young age. In 2021, he became the youngest finisher of the gruelling 6 Peaks Challenge, completing it in an impressive 10 hours and 7 minutes.

The TROYSTA RUN honours Troy’s life while serving a dual purpose, to raise awareness of bacterial meningitis and to support the trail running community that meant so much to him.

All proceeds from the event go directly towards trail maintenance and security for the trails around George, helping to preserve these routes for future runners and families to enjoy.

Entries close on 5 February and no on-the-day entries will be accepted.

In addition to honouring Troy’s legacy, the event highlights the importance of meningitis prevention. Elective vaccinations are available to help protect loved ones from this serious disease.
