POLITICS - South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen is expected to step down from the party’s top job ahead of internal elections due in about two months’ time, according to international and local news reports (Netwerk24, Central News and Bloomsberg).

The announcement is likely to be made this week as tensions within the DA leadership continue to simmer, reflecting ongoing internal debates over strategy and recent factional disputes.

At this stage there has been no official confirmation, but the development marks a potentially significant shift in the leadership of South Africa’s main opposition party.

Steenhuisen will make a formal announcement on Wednesday, but he cautioned against hearsay, arguing that “until you see me outlining the full set of facts tomorrow, avoid speculation”.
